Oklahoma State University is a large institution with a multitude of diverse organizations, with several branch campuses, and dozens of colleges, centers and divisions. Finding the right person to ask sometimes can be a daunting task.
So who runs what?
The Computer Science Department only has control of the equipment in it's labs and offices (the rooms on the 2nd floor and rooms 312 to 316 on the third floor of Mathematics, Statistics, and Computer Science Building). The department does not run any networked equipment, or any labs outside the three labs on the 2nd floor. A simple rule of thumb is "as soon as the wire hits the wall, our responsiblity ends". The faculty and staff of the department always try to be helpful, but there are limits (we've actually had students want us to come to their dorm rooms and work on their personal machines!).
The university's main computer group ITD (Information Technology Division) is the largest computer organization on campus employing several hundred people. ITD runs the campus network, the publicly available computer labs, assigns userids, and all the administrative systems used by the university.
Another simple responsiblity test, since our main machine must be accessed through the network, is if you see 'Oklahoma State Computer Science Department' (in say a login banner), then you've made it to the department's equipment and it's our responsiblity. If you don't see 'Computer Science Department' then you haven't made it to us. Our banner should be your guide.
